INTERNET HANDOUT FOR BEGINNERS 

INTRODUCTION TO INTERNET

The Internet which is an acronym for international  network was born out of the need to increase the level of communication system by the U>S Department of Defense in the Mid 1960’s during the cold war, it was then called Apranet, and only few establishments like the Government bodies and Universities. Then in 1991, the internet usage extended from the military an d higher institutions of learning to individual usage.

In 1993, a man called Tim Bernerlee developed the World Wide Web (WWW). The World Wide Web is a System of internet server that support specially formatted documents. The documents are formatted in a script known as Hypertext Markup Language(HTML) This HTML supports links to another document.

Which simply mean that one can jump from one page to another by clicking with the mouse.

Note:-Tim Bernerlee is the father of the World Wide Web (WWW).

HOW  DO WE GET CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET

Providers of  internet services can be classified into three different categories according to their hierarchy. They includes:-

1.    International Platform Providers (IPP):- They are the first level in internet hierarchy. They establish connection to Internet Service Providers. These connections are measured in Bandwidth. Thus, Bandwidth describes the quantity of data that can be transmitted over the internet per second.
2.    Internet Service Providers:-They are the second level in internet connectivity. They purchase their Bandwidth from IPP. They offer internet service to subscribers.
3.    Subscribers:-They are the last or third level in internet connectivity. They receive the connections from ISP. Subscribers offers internet services to individuals which are the final consumers of internet services.

DEFINITION OF INTERNET:-The term or concept internet, is an acronym for international network. It can be defined as a network of computers connected together in order to share available resources. Internet is a global village which makes information sourcing easy.

Computers on internet communicate with a common language known as Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).

Note:-For one to be connected to the internet, he/she must have an ISP.

BROWSERS:-These are special programs use to navigate or move around the in the globe.

SEARCH ENGINE­:- These are special website or domain designed for a dedicated purpose.

HOW TO LAUNCH AND USE A WEB BROWSER

1.    Open your web browser e.g Mozilla Firefox or otherwise
2.    Under the address bar, type the website you want to visit
3.    Click on go button or press enter from the keyboard

Note:-When a web browser opens, it displays a default home page.

SCREEN ELEMENTS OR INTERFACE OF A WEB BROWSER

1.    Title bar:-It shows the name of the browser a user is working and at the same time the web page currently displaying on the screen.
2.    Menu bar:- It a bar beneath the title bar, it contains all the commands of a web browser.
3.    Standard bar:- It contains the essentials frequently used commands. It serves shortcut to the menu bar.
4.    Address bar:-  This is the bar in which websites are entered.
5.    Download status bar:- It shows the level of the download a user is running
6.    Scroll bars:-These are used to move around in a web browser.
7.    Task bar:- It contains the start button with date and time. In order words, it is referred to as the footer bar.



HOW TO CHANGE DEFAULT HOME PAGE

1.    Click on tool menu
2.    Click on option
3.    Under home page, type the url or website you want as your default home page
4.    Click on apply and ok.

HOW TO CREATE EMAIL ACCOUNT

1.    Open your web browser
2.    Type the E-mail website you want to use to open the account under the address bar. e.gwww.yahoonail.com
3.    Click on go button or press enter from the keyboard
4.    Click on create new account or sign-up
5.    Fill the form for the registrations
6.    Click on create my account.

HOW TO CHECK MAIL

1.    Open your web browser
2.    Underthe address bar, type the website you used in creating the e-mail account.
3.    Type your e-mail address and password in the space provided
4.    Click on sign-in or press enter from the keyboard.
5.    Click on check mail or inbox
6.    Click on the subject of the mail you want to check.

NOTE:-When you finish checking the mail, click on sign-out or log-out in order to close your email account.

HOW TO SEND A MAIL

1.    Open your web browser
2.    Type the email website you want to use in sending the mail in the address bar.
3.    Press enter from the keyboard or go button
4.    Click on compose or new
5.    Under “To” type the e-mail address of the recipients
6.    Under “Cc” type the e-mail address of other recipients you want to send the same mail.
7.    Under message body, type the message you want to send
8.    Click on send.

HOW TO ATTACK FILE(S) TO A MAIL

1.    From your e-mail page, click on compose or new
2.    Click on attach file
3.    Click on browse
4.    Select the file location where you saved the document
5.    Click on the document
6.    Click on open
7.    Click on attach file and allow it to attach to your mail.

HOW TO DOWNLOAD AN ATTACHMENT

1.    From your e-mail box, click on inbox
2.    Click on the subject of the mail that contains the attachment
3.    Click on the file icon
4.    Click on download file and allow it to download
5.    Click on save or open and ok.

HOW TO SEARCH INFORMATION ON THE NET

1.    Open your web browser
2.    Type the website you want to use to search for the information under the address bar e.g (www.google.com)
3.    Press enter from the keyboard or click on go button
4.    Type the question you are sourcing for in the space provided
5.    Click on google search or press enter from the keyboard
6.    Click on the link that best provides the answer to your question
7.    Read the information on the internet page or copy it to an editing window for future references.

One can have fun or entertain his/herself on the net thorough the following means.
