LATEST NEWS FROM ENGLISH SPORTS
BOSTON (AP) — The Red Sox have the most wins in the majors at the All-Star break after one of their worst seasons. They're 58-39 with a 2½-game lead over the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East. With just 11 more wins, they'll match their total for all of last year when they were 69-93 and finished last in the division.
BOSTON (AP) — The Red Sox send three to tonight's All-Star game in New York. Pitcher Clay Buchholz, designated hitter David Ortiz and second baseman Dustin Pedroia are reserves on the American League squad. Home field advantage in the World Series is up for grabs. The World Series representative of whichever league wins tonight's game gets home field advantage in the fall classic.
WALTHAM, Mass. (AP) — It was the first thing Celtics general manager Danny Ainge told Keith Bogans and Kris Humphries when they arrived in Boston: We're not tanking this season. Ainge wanted to reassure the former Brooklyn Nets who were acquired in the deal that sent Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce to Brooklyn. The deal followed the trade of coach Doc Rivers to Los Angeles, which kicked off the rebuilding process for the team that won the 2008 championship and returned to the NBA finals two years later.
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska prosecutors are moving to have probation revoked for Patriots' defensive back Alfonzo Dennard. The 23-year-old Dennard was pulled over in Lincoln, Nebraska, early Thursday morning and is charged with first-offense drunken driving, refusing a chemical test and a traffic infraction. It was Dennard's second arrest in 15 months. The former Cornhuskers star hasn't served a 30-day jail sentence for assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest outside a Lincoln bar in April of 2012.
EAST HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — The U.S. men's national team hosts Costa Rica tonight in a Gold Cup match at Rentschler Field in East Hartford. This matchup will determine the winner of Group C in the CONCACAF tournament.
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. (AP) — Boston College senior Alex Amidon has been named to the watch list for the Biletnikoff Award, which goes annually to college football's best wide receiver. Amidon was a first-team all-ACC selection last season, when he had 78 receptions for more than 1,200 yards.
BOSTON (AP) — Artie Gore made his major-league debut as an umpire in 1947 and his fellow umpires autographed a ball used in that game for him. That game on April 15th, 1947 also was Jackie Robinson's first in the majors. Now it's being auctioned off for more than $20,000 at the FanFest in New York as part of festivities for tonight's All-Star game. Gore's nephew, Richard Flaherty, found the ball last year among the belongings at his father's home in Watertown, Massachusetts.
