MICROSOFT PUBLISHER HANDOUT




INTRODUCTION TO MICROSOFT PUBLISHER

Microsoft Publisher is an application package designed by Microsoft Cooperation.  It belongs to a big application known as Microsoft Office/Office Suite. It is basically used for designing.

DEFINITION:-  It can be defined as a publication application package used  in creating different types of designs such as calendar, certificate, invitation cards, hand bills/flyers, letter heading etc.
Note:-In Ms Publisher a file is saved as publication.

STEPS TO LAUNCH MS PUBLISHER

1.    Click on start button
2.    Click on All program
3.    Click on Microsoft Office
4.    Click on Microsoft Publisher

SCREEN ELEMENTS OF MICROSOFT PUBLISHER

1.    Title Bar:-  It contains the file and program a user is working with at a given time.
2.    Menu Bar:-  It contains all the commands or instructions used to communicate with publisher
3.    Standard Bar:-  It is the most frequently used bar. It contains shortcut commands which can be accessed easily without using the menu bar.
4.    Formatting Bar:- It is a bar used to beautify a workbook. It is also a shortcut bar.
5.    Tool Bar:-  It is a bar used to manipulate graphics in publisher..
6.    Horizontal & Vertical Scroll Bar:- These are bars used to navigate within an  environment.
7.    Status Bar:- It displays a detailed information concerning the environment a user is working with.
8.    Editing Window:-  It is an environment used for data manipulation
9.    Task Bar:-  It a bar that contains the start button with date and time.

WAYS OF CREATING A PUBLICATION

1.    Using wizard publication:-  This involves the user to follow the step by step method for the publication processes.
2.    Using templates:-  It contains already designed background which a user can use to create a publication.
3.    Using existing publication:-  It is a method of editing an already existing publication in order to produce a new design.
4.    Using blank publication:-  It requires the user to start from the beginning for the publication processes. It has a blank page.

Note:-Among the above mentioned ways of creating a publication, wizard publication will be used in creating of calendars, letter heading, flyers, invitation cards, labels etc while Blank publication will be used in creating of certificates and other graphics.

STEPS TO DESIGN A CALENDAR

1.    Click on file menu
2.    Click on new
3.    Click on publication for print
4.    Click on calendar
5.    Select any calendar of your choice
6.    Select monthly of yearly calendar
7.    Set the date range
8.    Click on ok
9.    Modify the calendar by changing the font of the text

STEPS TO DESIGN A LETTER HEADING WITH WORD ART

1.      Click on insert menu
2.      Click on picture or Word Art
3.      Click on  Word Art
4.      Select any Word Art shape of your choice
5.      Type the text for the Word Art
6.      Modify the Word Art
7.      Click on ok



STEPS TO INSERT A CLIPART

1.      Click on insert menu
2.      Click on picture
3.      Click on clipart
4.      Under search box, type the name of what you are searching and click on go
5.      Or click or organize clips, double click on office collection and then select any folder that contains the picture you want
6.      Then copy and paste the picture in your working area.

STEPS TO MOVE A WORD ART OR CLIPART

1.      Right click on the Word Art or clipart
2.      Click on format Word Art or clipart
3.      Click on layout
4.      Click on any text wrapping of your choice
5.      Click on ok.

STEPS TO INSERT AN AUTOSHAPE

1.      Under the drawing bar, click on autoshape
2.      Select any category that contains the shape you want to insert e.g Basic shape
3.      Select the object
4.      Click and drag on the working area to produce the object

STEPS TO APPLY A FILL COLOUR TO A WORD ART OR OBJECT

1.      Click on the object or Word Art you want to apply the fill colour
2.      Under the drawing bar, select fill colour
3.      Then select any colour of  your choice

STEPS TO APPLY LINE COLOUR

1.      Select the object or Word Art
2.      Under the drawing bar, select line colour
3.      Select any colour of your choice




STEPS TO CHANGE THE LINE STYLE OF AN OBJECT

1.      Select the object
2.      Under the drawing bar, select line style
3.      Select any style of your choice

STEPS TO APPLY A BORDER ART

Border Art is a rectangular object used to frame a publication.

1.        Select a rectangular tool and draw
2.        Click on format menu
3.        Click on auto-shape
4.        Click on border art
5.        Select any border art of your choice
6.        Click on ok
7.        Change the colour weight if needed
8.        Click on ok.

MASTER PAGE:-This is a command used to combine two different pages together.

STEPS TO APPLY A MASTER PAGE

1.    Click on view menu
2.    Click on master page
3.    Select text tool
4.    Type the master page
5.    Modify the master page
6.    Click on view menu and click on master page in order to combine the two pages together.

STEPS TO DESIGN A CERTIFICATE.

Note:-Certificates are best designed using blank page publication.

1.    click on file menu
2.    click non new
3.    click on blank page size
4.    select any blank page of your choice
5.    modify the page if needed
6.    click on ok
7.    type and modify the text
8.    apply border art
9.    apply a master page

STEPS TO PRINT A PUBLICATION

1.    click on file menu
2.    click on print
3.    observe the print options
4.    click on print or ok

THINGS TO NOTE

At the completion of this package, users are expected to know how to design:

1.    calendars (monthly or yearly calendars)
2.    certificates
3.    letter headings
4.    invitation cards
5.    labels etc
